Sept 14, 2012 – our last Friday

Woke up at around 330am and Moogle wasn’t in bed with us.  That just doesn’t happen.  So I got up and looked around the house – no Moogle.  So I grabbed my flashlight and went outside, quietly calling to him.  We live at an intersection, one street of which has an occasional car even late at night and I’ve worried about that.  I even shined my light out to the street when he still wasn’t showing up.  Then there’s the wildlife – stories of coyotes roaming golf courses (we live on one) and mauling dogs in their yards – and there was that raccoon eating their food the other night.  So, there’s a couple things to be paranoid about.
Walked around the house twice, still no Moogle.  Decided there was nothing more I could do so I turned off my light, turned to the door, took two steps and tripped over him – see, he’s solid black and gets tripped over in the night a lot.
No idea where he was but at least he’s ok.  He followed me into the room, crawled up on the bed, and was guys his continually present, invasively snuggly self the rest of the night.

Went to Wesley’s IEP meeting.  It went well.

Aaron, from home fellowship, brought us a microwave, since ours that came with the house sucks.

In preparation for the microwave, I moved a lot of stuff to on top of the cabinets, so the wine decanter, wine glasses, tabletop siphon pot, and fondue set all live up by the ceiling now.

Got Little Anita’s for lunch.  I had the carne adovada enchiladas, she had shredded beef chimichanga.  What were we thinking?  Too stuffed to move and have to go run errands.  It was ok but expensive.

Went to Goodwill, Savers, and World Market, picked up a couple things.  Found out World Market doesn’t sell the Indonesian Teak tealight candles in big bags anymore – not happy about that.  Now you can only buy 12 for $5 or buy a big one and I don’t like big pillars because we use ceiling fans a lot and all it takes is 20 mins of an unnoticed breeze and the candle is ruined.
Got a decent set of six plates at Goodwill that should work with the table for $15.

Got a bottle of our favorite Irish Cream – Emmet’s – to have with the chocolate covered coffee beans we got at World Market.  That’s for tonight’s puzzle and Ruby 3 event, continued from last Friday.
UPDATE:  It’s getting tougher, but here’s our progress so far…

And Ruby 3 gets less and less interesting.  It was entertaining years ago when I was on a lot of drugs but now it’s just meh.  We’re halfway through it.  I was frankly glad when the tape ended tonight.

Tomorrow (our last Saturday) she has her side job patient in the morning then we are finally gonna do what we’ve planned for a regular Saturday activity – we’ve both been liking recipes on Pinterest and, tomorrow, we will compare our findings, decide on one, go shop for the ingredients, then cook it together.  Hope it all goes well.

Thursday, Sept 13, 2012

Moogle threw up his breakfast this morning – on the tile floor, fortunately – he hadn’t done that since before we moved in here and we’ve feared it.  I guess we’ll start locking the kitties out a little while after their breakfast from now on.

It was quite chilly this morning at Wesley’s bus stop.  I gave him a little hoodie but I should have given him a real jacket.  And I didn’t notice until we got there the zipper didn’t even work.
And I was wishing I’d worn something warmer than my little black leather jacket.  Maybe some shoes instead of sandals :P
Either way, today’s the first day we needed jackets.

I’d updosed my espresso shots to 21g the last couple days and it seemed to have solved the large bubbles problem but this morning they’re back.  Grrrrr.  I just don’t know what else to do – I’m out of variables except the beans themselves.  But, we are confident enough with our skills that we went ahead and got some good water.  We’d been using tap water so far – no sense spending money if every shot will just be a practice shot anyway.  Hopefully, we’ll be able to spend a few bucks on some good beans this weekend.

I thoroughly scrubbed, descaled, and backflushed Lady Gaggia and have set reminders in my phone to do it periodically.

I resurrected my 6v Prodigy v3.1 but I need a new tank carto and some Adam’s SinApple from VaporCast Store for my favorite after-dinner vape :)

Making my oaty veggie meatloaf tonight – gonna try it with baked potatoes.

Tonight we’re going to home fellowship and it’ll be the first time in…  uh…  let’s see – last week was canceled, week before we didn’t go because Mom & Dad Benton might arrive, and the week before that was church cleaning night.
So, we haven’t actually been to the host house since before we moved in our new house.

Btw, Terra starts her new job on Monday.  Just orientation, so it’s a day shift but she will presumably start her regular shift (2p-10p, ugh) soon thereafter, which means I’ll start my house husband job full time.  Hopefully it doesn’t last very long.

I got caught up on my Bible reading plan – I’m on day 34, I think.  It’s a one-year plan but I started a six-month plan last night for bedtime listening.  I was playing the audio portion at bedtime (I have been going to sleep to an audio Bible for many years) but it ended too quickly so I figure a plan half as long should have portions twice as long.

My sleep debt is down to 7:38 thanks to not taking my phone to bed.  But, I woke up very early and had a hard time getting back to sleep.  Well, we go to bed at 9 and get up at 7 most days.  So, a change will have to be made.  But, I think that change is about to happen because of her new job.  She will be getting home at 10:30 four nights a week, and if I change my sleep requirement to seven hours a night (which I think is all I need), that would mean a bedtime of midnight would work out nicely.  That gives her a little wind down time after work, us a little time together, yet doesn’t interfere with my schedule (getting Wesley ready for school, etc.).
We’re having talks about whether I should be a full time house husband again.  I really want to work, but with her schedule, he’d always be at a babysitter and basically have no parents.  It’s bad enough he will see her very very little.  Plus, I’d have to get off work, get him, make dinner, then it’s bedtime.  And all cooking and housework would be on me anyway, plus a full time job.  Which means quick dinners and “good enough” housekeeping – a situation neither of us wants.  We’ll have to see how her schedule and floating weekends works out.

A couple balloons floated by close enough to identify them in our book – Patriot and Re-Max.  Balloon watching has become an exciting part of our mornings, even if they don’t get very close.

I am a genius…  At the nursing home in Alamogordo (her last job with regular hours – a YEAR ago), she used to come home to candlelit dinners with cloth napkins and the whole bit.  If I’m being a house husband while she works, it would be time to start that sort of thing again BUT she’s coming home LONG after dinner.  Well, it occurred to me that she could come home to a bubble bath!  Then, we stop having our weekend spns thing when I read a romance novel to her and we do that every work night instead of once a week.  A bubble bath and a chapter from our romance novel!  Eh?  Genius, right?  I think so.  And she loves the idea :)

Terra went in to her new job to do some paperwork and orientation type stuff.  Life will change drastically very soon.  Scary yet exciting.  And many rules in our family creed will be hard or impossible to sick to.  At least until she can get a day shift.

Tonight, we’ve decided to go ahead and shift bedtime to 10 and therefore quiet time at 830ish.  That will mean more free time after dinner (usually 6) so that will be nice, too.

It’s a crop of a bad pic but can you see Christmas Kitty silhouetted on our back wall watching cars go by?

I saw that out our bedroom window last night but just couldn’t get a good pic with my phone.

It was cloudy all day with occasional brief drizzles.  Now, at 4p, it’s raining with thunder.  Doubt it will last long.  I’ve had the doors open most of the day.  Fall really is coming.  REALLY looking forward to Halloween month.
UPDATE:  It poured for quite awhile.  And a little water leaked through the AC intake thing in the entryway.  It’s very wet outside now so I think it’s safe to assume no balloons will fly tomorrow :(

Terra went to her first self-confrontation class tonight and Wesley and I sat and watched YouTube videos.  I introduced him to Matt Harding of fame and found out he has a new video for 2012, which I shared with Terra when she got home.

Btw, that’s how I discovered that the PS3 YouTube app is having issues since the PS3 FW 4.25 update this morning.  I am extremely not happy about it.  It hangs on shots that are very busy and colorful in HD so I think it’s a memory caching issue.

We watched episodes 15 and 16 of H+ (which is in HD) and the issues consistently happened on the opening WB logo.

And I’m not going to say what happened to our wedding certificate today but suffice it to say it will never be the same again and that’s very sad.

Tuesday, sept 11, 2012

We got a couple small bottles of Torani syrup at Walmart the other day, caramel and vanilla.  This morning, I made Terra an iced vanilla latte and I had an iced caramel Americano.
We really do avoid flavoring coffee – we see it as what people do to cover the taste of bad coffee – we keep it on hand for guests who insist on flavorings.  But, needless to say, we currently have bad coffee that could use some covering up.  At least until we can get some more practice and better beans.

Btw, both drinks took between 9 and 10 minutes each to make, from pulling out the grinder to cleanup completion.  I make one drink at a time and like to be fully reset after each – everything clean and put away.

No phones in bed seems to have worked – I slept nine and a half hours last night!  I’ve been using a sleep tracking app since August 1 and so I can say definitively that it’s the most sleep I’ve gotten in over a month, at least.

I am almost caught up on my Bible reading plan, thanks to the YouVersion Bible app‘s feature that will read you your daily portion out loud.  (I’m using the ESV translation, which has an audio version – not all do.)

After several days of not being able to connect to my favorite internet radio station, – Chill, I posted on their Facebook page to see if anyone else had this issue and got an immediate reply from Curtis, who works there doing I don’t know what.  He not only got me going again (he gave me a special backdoor stream link!) but even put me in touch with a guy named Justin, who is the one who actually programs the station!  It was like meeting one of the artists themselves and I drooled all over him telling him how much and for how long I’ve loved his station.  I told him it truly is the soundtrack of our life.

Did some house cleaning, still caught up on laundry.

Terra worked her side job this morning, came home for lunch, and then had to go see her patient in Bibo (hour and a half or so away and out of cell range) and, when she gets back, she has an interview at a place very close to here that called her this morning because of a resume she turned in there in MARCH.  Praying praying praying…
UPDATE:  She got the job!  She starts pretty much immediately and the pay is great.  BUT, it’s a bad schedule.  2p-10p, 4 on, 2 off.  Hmm…  A steady paycheck is great.  And it’s a nursing home, so it will be steady hours, and that’s great.  But, still.  She’s going to take it but we’re not looking forward to what this is going to do to our home life and our evening church-related stuff – both very important to us.

The garage door didn’t close when she hit the button on the remote this morning.  Took me forever to figure out it was the sun shining on the sensor, so I leaned a piece of flooring tile against it to make a shadow and it seems to be working.  Wow…  I fixed something :P

I mixed up a big batch of vape liquid today.  I have always just made a 30mL bottle at a time until all the nicotine liquid is gone but this time I used a condiment squeeze bottle, poured in all the nicotine liquid, then added 4 parts VG to that and shook it up.  We got some strawberry flavoring with this shipment for her, so I then took a smaller bottle and put one part flavoring, then filled it with four parts of the liquid I made.  I hope she likes it.  I’ve never made flavored stuff before.

We got our first electric bill.  It only covers 10 days but it’s $62.  That’s a huge relief.  We’ve been scared how much utilities would be and, if it’s only gonna be less than a couple hundred bucks a month in the summer time (we have AC, not an evap cooler) then we’ll be fine :)

After dinner, we watched my DVD of 9/11 – she’d never seen it and I haven’t watched it in a few years.

I guess tomorrow, she quits her job in preparation for the new one.  Big changes coming…

Monday, Sept 10

I swapped out the lock nut type thing from my old Kyocera grinder into the new Porlex grinder.  The internals of the two seem to be identical yet we can’t seem to get as fine a grind.  With this old nut in, it does cinch down tighter and I almost choked my espresso machine this morning so that’s a good sign.  Still have the bubbles issue, though.

Kept Wesley home from school today.  He’s been kicking it on the couch all day watching a ‘how stuff is made’ show on Netflix for Kids.  He felt fine all day but, after a fever half of yesterday and most of the night, it seemed the thing to do.

Cleaned house, mopped the kitchen, listened to some Bible to try to get caught up on my reading plan.  Tried to nap a bit – got about half an hour.

Terra had to leave at 7 so we got up at 530.  Always harder to wake up when it’s still dark.  And we got to bed late.

Tonight, we are starting a “no phones in bed” policy because we both (uh, and especially I) lay there way too long after we should be sleeping.
(I am therefore gonna start typing this daily recap post up throughout the day and finalize it at our nightly quiet time.)

Out favorite internet radio station, – Chilled, is down this afternoon, presumably because of the GoDaddy outage/attack.

I am trying, again, to make a mexi-chicken rice bake sort of thing.  The last try was total disaster.  If it’s good, I’ll post the recipe.
UPDATE: It was sensational! :)

Wesley finally fell asleep on the couch and Terra is having a nap and my favorite internet radio station is out.  It’s just way too quiet in here.

I got a category-specific recent posts widget for my sidebar to list the ten previous daily recaps and a separate one for everything else.

I have put our phone chargers across the bedroom.  I have been making updates to this post all day.  It’s now time to go put my phone on the charger, set my internet radio alarm clock app, put my audio Bible app on, set the sleep timer, hit the ‘going to sleep now’ button on my SleepBot app (it’s on a15 minute delay), and try to go right to sleep rather than laying there wishing I was Pinteresting or reading my news feeds, etc..
It’s the only way I’ll get this sleep debt down…

What a great day :)

Woke up (late – I guess lack of sleep caught up to me) to find the breakfast crock pot casserole thing turned out pretty good.
We love this new house, new dining room set, and loved eating a nice breakfast as a family in the morning light in a nice dining room at a nice table.
I made cappuccinos and they weren’t too bad.  I clearly need more practice and better beans.

We saw quite a few balloons this morning, a few were close enough to identify in our book we keep by the windows.  The Camelot, Sandia Sunrise, and Hearts A’Fire all came quite close.
So that was awesome.

Made it to church on time – that’s always good.

After church, we went over to the Cottonwood Walmart and got Way Out West biscochitos (the best I’ve ever had and they’re not widely available) for Miss Karen’s visit.
We rushed home to clean up a bit of mess in the kitchen, got the table set with the plates and napkins, and put on Couer de Pirate’s first album, which we thought she’d like since she is a piano player and music is a very big part of her life in many ways.
We put all that effort into it because we love having guests that much :)
(For the record, we knew the plates and napkins wouldn’t even be used – they just make the table look so nice!)
I brought out the rarely-used tabletop siphon and made coffee for the ladies (we also picked up butane at the Walmart) and served it with the biscochitos.  We had an awesome visit with her :)

She is a dear friend we knew at church in Alamogordo – she was the main planner of our wedding and moved up here a couple months before we did and we haven’t seen her since then.

Btw, she gave us a hand-made card as a house-warming gift…

After she left, I gave Wesley a bath, Terra made a little dinner, and then we watched Explorers – a childhood favorite of mine they’d never seen that is suddenly available on Netflix streaming – a very pleasant surprise.

Wesley was complaining of a headache during Miss Karen’s visit and fell asleep on the couch.  He rarely falls asleep during the day.  During the movie he was feeling hot.  Terra gave him some children’s Tylenol and we brought his mattress into our room and he’s sleeping on the floor.  He’s asleep already – when I get done typing this up, I’ll go feel him again.

The weather today was awesome again, very cool.  In the early and late part of the day, we had all the doors and windows open – was still too warm to do that in the warmest part of the day before two and four.  But it does feel like fall is finally coming.

Anyway, all in all, a great, full day.
Tomorrow, we have to get up at 530 so she can head for work in Grants at 7 and obviously he may or may not be going to school.  She has two job interviews this week, we have a school meeting, she starts the self-confrontation class on Wednesday evening, so this will be a very busy week.

Saturday with guests, cooking

Last night, around 1130 or so, I heard Christmas Kitty growling outside our door (where their food dishes are) and I assumed a neighborhood kitty was stealing their dinner.  It was a raccoon!  I didn’t know they had raccoons in the desert!  And it was Christmas Kitty’s size – a little bigger, even.  Is that normal?  It even moved like a cat.  When I turned on the porch light and made some noise, it left but not exactly in a hurry and Christmas Kitty even followed it, which I’m not sure is wise.

Made straight espresso shots for Terra and I this morning.

Don (@KonyaHurricane whom I’ve known on Twitter longer than anyone) was in town so he dropped by – it’s been a couple years maybe?  He was one of very few rare guests we’d have over for coffee at mom’s in Alamogordo.  We even disc golfed a couple times.  He and I and Terra caught up for a bit, I made him an iced latte.  He brought his son about Wesley’s age and he watched Wesley play PS3 games but didn’t join in.

Tomorrow, Miss Karen, a friend from Alamogordo who lives here now is coming by.

Terra and I want to start cooking together – experimenting with stuff we’ve never tried before – we think Saturdays would be a good day to do it.  I’d been browsing recipes the last few days to try to make a Mexican chicken rice bake sorta thing and finally just decided to make a composite.  It was awful.  No, really, I mean a total disaster.  We ended up having to get Dominos!  I mean, it was unsalvageable.

But, before bed, we put together this breakfast crock pot casserole thing I found on Pinterest and we have very very very high hopes.

And we again had a slumber party night substitute that consisted of kicking it on the couch together (still too warm to snuggle) and I read her two more chapters of a Harlequin romance novel we picked up a couple weeks ago just for these nights and so far we’re really enjoying it.
Btw, the new rule for these nights is our phones get turned OFF.  I get cold sweats just thinking about it.  But, we need some time cut off from the rest of the world.

Our package from FreedomSmokeUSA got here today and I placed the order Thursday morning so that’s awesome.  So, I can finally start mixing up my own vape liquid now and save lotsa money :)

We are going through coffee beans very fast now.  I thought we’d be using less than when we were only making press.
And we are still stumped about the huge bubbles right about the one ounce point when we pull a shot.
We plan to have cappuccinos with breakfast tomorrow so we’ll find out how bad our milk frothing skills have gotten after months of non-use.

The weather today was incredible.  Rained last night and was cloudy all morning that turned mostly sunny by the early afternoon.  Had a very nice cool breeze all day.  We turned off the ac and had many windows and doors open.  It felt kinda like fall.  But I’m not assuming warm weather is over.  But, it sure would be nice.

Speaking of our kitties – and just so Christmas Kitty doesn’t get the only mention – here’s the look Moogle gave me when I wouldn’t let hims on my lap yesterday…

finally Friday?

It hardly matters since Terra’s side job is on Saturdays and we have to get up at the usual time anyway. Though, she’s usually home by 11 or 12 and then the weekend begins. And this weekend should be a good one :)

I copped out and made tuna helper tonight. The chicken bake thing I was gonna make has been postponed until tomorrow when Terra and I are gonna make it together.

I haven’t played Words with Friends in what? A week? I was addicted for a few days but now (not even a month later), I just think it isn’t as much fun as I thought it would be.

I didn’t ever get to the load of laundry in the dryer today. And I’ve been slacking on house cleaning.

Made iced Americanos this morning. Terra made them this afternoon. They’re easy. Summer is usually boring at our bar. Meh.

The shots are coming out weird. After about an ounce, we’re getting large bubbles. These are cheap beans but we’d swear this had never been such a consistent issue before – it happens to both of us, every time we pull a shot. We’d been using some months-old (but vac-bagged) cheap beans but it’s also happening on the beans we just got today. They’re also cheap beans – and the same brand (8 O’clock) but, again, we don’t remember this ever being an issue before. And we used these back then, too.

Terra has two job interviews next week – one at a methadone clinic in tha hood, one with a home care place.

We have Wesley’s IEP meeting next week, too.

Placed an order with FreedomSmokeUSA for some pure nicotine liquid so I can start making my own vape liquid again and we won’t have to pay the stupid price of buying it in a shop.

We all watched some YouTube videos before quiet time tonight – I showed them The Two Talking Cats, Trololo Guy, and The Algorithm Match, for instance.

Got a related posts plugin for this here blog. Kinda depressing. My old blog had years of posts to choose from. Someday, I hope to make a friend that can retrieve all those old posts out of my broke blog so I can import them into this one.

Btw, after two or three weeks of no lethargy, it suddenly hit again this afternoon. So tired I felt like I was trying to walk underwater. Just drained all over my body. It went away after a couple hours or so. But it really sucked while it lasted.

Only two balloons this morning. And far away, as usual. I really miss having a great view of them every morning.

After Wesley went to bed, Terra and I stayed up until 11p, listening to my old tapes of Ruby 3 and working on a puzzle we got from the thrift store. It’s one of those story, solve-the-mystery-by-solving-the-puzzle ones they used to make. (Or do they still?) We made good progress but want it to last three sittings (maybe a Friday night ritual).
We started the night with Irish cream mixed with espresso on ice and poured another Irish cream at each episode break :)

And, for my final thought, how about a pic of some goofy dork with napkin rings on his eyes?

I know him.
He brushes my teeth every morning.

Thursday, Sept 6

Home fellowship was canceled tonight, so we spent some quality time with the PS3 YouTube app – watched a bunch of coffee videos and the 14 episodes released so far of H+.

I made iced Americanos at breakfast – they were good enough and the shots are going well.

This grinder doesn’t have enough steps so we’re grinding the same way every time.

Terra made me a straight shot this afternoon – the maiden voyage of that cool demi someone gave me on a job with Noel…

I rearranged the breakfast nook. We have big plans for it but so far, we hate it.

We got some green plates from the dollar store that work rather nicely and I changed up the centerpiece…

We absolutely love our dining room set.

Terra went to the DOL WorkForce place to apply for some jobs. Once we come up with money for Wesley to go to the SAFE program, I will begin a search as well.

We lost the key to the Lexx.

We got a puzzle from the thrift store – one of those mystery story puzzles and, this Friday night, we plan to work on it in the breakfast nook and listen to my old tapes of Ruby 3 – she’s never heard it before.

We picked up a couple Halloween decorations – can’t wait for Halloween month to start.  We’re debating whether to try to decorate the while house or just focus on certain areas.

Wishing the weather would turn cooler so we’re in the mood for cappuccinos – we need to start practicing our milk frothing.

Didn’t have quiet time tonight because we were YouTube’ing.

Wesley did his three days of being grounded (first time we’ve ever tried that with him) so he gets to return to normal life tomorrow.  Grounding consisted of confinement to his room with no music or movies, no watching hot air balloons in the morning, no quiet time with us.  He hated it so mission accomplished :P  But he did it with no tantrums our anything.  We explained the what and why daily to try to ensure he understood.

We think Saturday for our spns (slumber party night substitute) we’re gonna agree on a Pinterest recipe we’ll make together and then sit on the couch and continue the romance novel I started reading to her on the last spns night we had two weeks ago.

We need to start having people over now that we have places for people to sit and a working coffee bar.

My sleep debt is currently at 7 hours, 24 minutes – pretty typical for me. Been thinking of changing my sleep requirement to 7 hours instead of 8. I’m always tired but not THAT tired.

Wednesday, Sept 5

I made iced coffee with espresso shots (“depth charges”) this morning.  It’s good to have the new grinder.

Stayed caught up on laundry.

Swept the rocks of the sidewalk.

Did some long overdue video editing.

Made a deer roast in the new crock pot with frozen mixed veg and tater tots.  Served with Texas toast.

Found out I have to turn off wifi on this phone to send/receive mms.  Not happy about that.

Still behind in my Bible reading plan.

Terra brought home a couple cool pots from Thrift Town that look nice on the new table.

Terra made iced lattes this afternoon – her first try of the new grinder.

We watched Glengarry Glen Ross in HD on Netflix – her first time.  I brushed Terra’s hair during most of it.

She got news on how her mileage will work from now on and it’s not good news.

Day two of Wesley being grounded – his first time in life, ever.

I’m so ready to have some guests for coffee.  Need some good beans.

Created a “somewhere” category on Pinterest for pics of cool places I see.

Came up with the idea of doing a daily recap blog post and giving up on a Lifestream.  This was prompted by seeing that Twitter is not going to support rss much longer.  But I’ve been wanting to simplify my homepage for a long time anyway.

Didn’t get a shower today, ew.

Still awake at midnight.  This not sleeping regularly has been going on ever since I stopped working.

Called for info on SAFE program for Wesley so I can go back to work and we can’t exactly afford it.  Hmmm…

This hot weather seems to be going on forever.  We’re both so ready for fall.
